He relates a vignette from his 1950's travels around the world, in part: "...travelling down the road, what little remained of it, built by General 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell in Burma. It took me seven days to cover twenty-four miles. At one point the bridge across a river had been swept away and the only chance of continuing was to for the river. To do this I had to work for hours leaving boulders into the numerous pools to fill them up. As I worked half a dozen Nagas (a one-time head-hunting people) appeared out of the jungle and set to work with a will.
