Description:

(1899-1970) SS Officer and chief interpreter of the Reich Foreign Language Office, Schmidt was instrumental in facilitating communication between Adolf Hitler in his meetings with Neville Chamberlain during the Munich Conference, and with other leaders including Philippe Petain, Francisco Franco and Ion Antonescu of Romania. Important typed D.S., 3pp. legal folio, Nuremberg, April 18, 1947, his biographical questionnaire completed while held as a prisoner, most likely in advance of his testimony for the prosecution during the IG Farben Trial. The document lists Schmidt's date of birth, education, and military service, as well as indicating that he joined the NSDAP very late, in 1943 and listing his party number "8,900,000". He further indicates that he joined the SS much earlier, in 1937, in order to comply with Hitler's wishes. He goes on to list the positions that he held as an interpreter in the foreign service, as well as his language qualifications and other duties. He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a few ink emendations to the final section, and an English identifying label has been affixed to the first page. Toned overall and with chips and small tears to the edges, as well as a paperclip mark at top right, else very good.
