Excellent group of eight very rare Japanese newspapers from leading publishers, each relating important military events during World War II. Each paper is generally 4pp. sm. folio, many with small photographs. Included is: Asahi Shinbun, Dec. 9, 1941, reporting on the attack on Pearl Harbor and the bombing of Singapore, discusses the declaration of war against the U.S., quotes American news sources that two ships had been sunk in Honolulu, mentions attacks on British vessel and Singapore, and blames the state of war on American economic and military threats. Maps of Oahu, Pearl Harbor and the Pacific are included. A Dec. 11, 1941 issue of Asahi Shinbun describes the disastrous sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse. With map and photos. A Dec.18,1941 issue of Asahi Shimbun includes a photo of the sinking of the former two British ships, with additional content on their destruction. The Dec. 11, 1941 issue of Yomiuri Shinbun describes land and naval action s and landings in the Philippines, as well as the sinking of an American submarine. The May 23, 1943 issue of Mainichi Shinbun delivers news of the death of Adm.Yamamoto whose airplane had been jumped by American attackers. The June 6, 1943 edition of the same paper offers a heavily illustrated account of Yamamoto's funeral. On Dec. 8, 1942, a year after Pearl Harbor, Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun issued an edition with a large map of the Pacific, locations of significant Allied ships sunk, Japanese occupation forces and the (astronomical) number of enemy casualties, and even Japanese attacks (of sorts) on the Aleutians, Pacific Northwest, and West Coast. The last paper, Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun of May 23,1941, offers general news on air combat, China,etc.
