Description:

OTTO SKORZENY'S LEATHER MAP CASE
OTTO SKORZENY (1908 - 1975) Nazi officer and Hitler's chief and favorite commando, he made a daring mountain-top rescue of Mussolini, placed English-speaking soldiers in American uniforms to mislead American forces in the Bulge, and after the war headed the organization that helped hundreds of ex-SS officers flee Germany. A fine, important relic from the great commando's career, a black pebbled leather German map case, approx. 10 x 8 x 2 in., flap intact, parts of two straps lost, buckle not present. Two-part interior compartment, with eight narrow compartments for pencils, eraser, etc. fitted to the front. This map case, very possibly with Skorzeny during some of his famous missions, was seized by one of his interrogators, U.S. M/Sgt. Seth W. Burchard, at Wiesbaden in the summer of 1945. The map case is accompanied by some excellent provenance including: a 3.5 x 5.5 in. photo of Skorzeny in captivity with Burchard at his side; a notarized letter of provenance from Burchard, Oct. 28, 1976 stating that the case was: '...part of the accoutrements of SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny at the time of his surrender to U.S. forces...'; and a subsequent letter of provenance from Joseph Sacchi, Nov. 7, 2008, stating that he had bought the map case from Burchard with the photograph and Burchard's letter of provenance and selling these pieces to Ray Zyla of Mohawk Arms. A great historic relic!
