Lot 405
405. ORDERING CARTRIDGES IN ALABAMA, 1861 A good early war-date Southern citizen's letter, 2pp. 8vo., in ink by Joseph Aryell, Huntsville, Ala., Mar. 29, 1861 concerning the purchase of cartridges for firearms. In part: "I enclose you a note from Brooklyn...I also got the goods from C & P [possibly Cooper & Ponds, NYC] but far from right. They sent me 1000 N. Model (old brass wall) cartridges costing 15.75 for which I do not anticipate a sale. I wrote for old model Navy & Rifle 86 R. Balls to the pound. They sent Navy but no Rifle cartridges. They also wrote that they could not send another Navy pistol to fit the breech unless I sent the breech and several other things were not right...". Negligible paper loss at left margin, else very good. $75-100
