In part: "...Guards and Patrols will pass John P. Nelson aged 54 years, residing at No. 35 Burbon Street, occupation none...having been duly enrolled and satisfactory evidence...shown that he is not liable to military duty...Col. Sheldon Sturgeon...". Signed by Capt. Edgar N. Bullard, 7th Vermont Vols. Bullard fought at the battle of Big Bethel in June 1861 while a member of the 1st Vermont and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel after the war. Fine. $75-100
