Description:

ORDER OF THE GERMAN EAGLE AWARD CERTIFICATE TO A SPANISH LIEUTENANT
Rare printed document, 1p. 9 1/2" x 13 3/4", Berlin, June 5, 1939, an award certificate granting the Merit Cross of the Order of the German Eagle, Third Class with Swords to Spanish lieutenant Don Luis Materrodena Terol. The certificate bears the facsimile signatures of Adolf Hitler and State Minister Otto Meissner at the conclusion, with a blind-embossed national eagle within a wreath of oak leaves at lower left. This award, presented in six classes between 1937 and 1943 and in nine classes thereafter, was granted to foreigners, especially diplomats, who were considered to be sympathetic to Nazism. Military recipients, such as the individual discussed here, received a version adding swords. The medal is unfortunately not present with this example. The certificate is housed in a cream presentation folder with a gilt national eagle embossed on the front cover. Also present is a printed booklet in German, 5pp. 4to., entitled "Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler - Verordnung und Satzung" ("Order of Merit of the German Eagle - Ordinance and Statute"), describing the criteria for receiving different degrees of the Order. This booklet also features a blind-embossed national eagle on the front cover. The group is rounded out by two printed document blanks, both 1p. 4to., one ins German and one in Spanish, both intended to list the name, profession, place of residence, nationality, and other information regarding the recipient of the Order, as well as portions of the original mailing envelope for the certificate. The presentation folder shows slight soiling, else very good to fine. Other notable recipients of various degrees of the Order included Charles Lindbergh, IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson, and foreign leaders including Francisco Franco, Hideki Tojo and Benito Mussolini.
