Description:

SS GUARD AND DOG-HANDLER WEHRPASS
Rare, fine content Wehrpass issued to a young member of the Waffen-SS and who would later handle guard dogs at the Neuengamme and Flossenburg concentration camps. Young Johannes Piepjohn, born on Christmas Day, 1923, was issued this document in Oldenburg on May 27, 1941. From August-October, 1941 he served with SS-Inf. Rgt. 6, then part of SS-Kampfgruppe Nord, active in Finland. On Sep. 17, 1941 he was injured in the legs by shrapnel and became unfit for combat duty. He was transferred to the guards unit of SS-TK Sturmbann Neuengamme. From Jan.-Feb., 1943 Piepjohn received training as a "Schutzhundehuhrer", or "guard dog handler" with the Hundeersatzstaffel Nachr. Abt. 20. In March, 1945, he was transferred to the guards unit at Flossenburg. Guard dogs were used at the camps not only to maintain order, but often to maim or even kill the unfortunate prisoners. Over 40,000 perished at Neuengamme, 16,000 of which died during the evacuation where Piepjohn surely participated. 30,000 died at Flossenburg, where Piepjohn was stationed before its liberation in April, 1945 and where he would have witnessed the murder of SOE agents, other Allied officers, and even Wilhelm Canaris.
