Description:

(OMAHA BEACH, D-DAY) GEORGE A. TAYLOR
(1899 – 1969) American Army general, most famous for the leadership of his men on Omaha Beach where he served as commander of the 16th Infantry Regiment, part of the famous 1st Infantry Division for which he earned a Distinguished Service Cross. He is remembered best for his most famous quote from Omaha Beach (misattributed to Gen. Norman Cota): 'There are two kinds of people who are staying on this beach: those who are dead and those who are going to die. Now let's get the hell out of here!' Rare grouping of five early postwar A.L.S.s, sent to a fellow veteran from several locations, all 1947-48. Some excellent content, in part: '...I didn't notice the background of the Red One in Reagan's care so much as my attention was called to the nine campaigns listed. They included French Morocco and I wondered why...the Belgian was prescribed to be worn on the left shoulder... there have been so many changes made in the 1st Division that I barely even recognize any names...I imagine [they] are in better shape than they have been since June of '45...two of the monuments in Europe are complete...I had seen the article by Bob Capa. Yes, I remember him very well. He was a Life photographer who went with us...He never was afraid of anything...nearly all the pictures he took [of the D-Day landings] were ruined in the dark room...the 1st Division has been cited by two foreign governments but not their own...was surprised to hear there was a chapter of the 1st Division Society in Rochester...' More good content. With transmittal covers, one signed.
