A pair of excellent postwar letters, both with fine D-Day content, written by two of the most prestigious paratrooper generals of the war. Each letter is 1p. 4to., 1988, on personal letterhead. Included is: MATHEW B. RIDGWAY (1895-1994) American Army general who led the 82nd Airborne in assaults on Sicily and on D-Day, jumping with his men. He writes to the 29th Infantry Division Association: '...I have been asked to write a tribute to...[your] members who were in the assault echelon with the mission of attacking over OMAHA Beach on D-Day, 06 June 1944. They played a gallant part in the successful accomplishment of the initial stage of what is the most hazardous of all military operations, a landing on a hostile shore...The accomplishment of their mission despite very heavy casualties, is a proud record of in the annals of the United States Army...' SOLD WITH: JAMES M. GAVIN (1907-1990) 'Jumpin Jim', a senior U.S. Army Officer and third Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He also praises the 29th Infantry, this time to a civilian, noting: '...The gallantry of those men who fell at Omaha Beach will never be forgotten, and it is very fitting that the 29th Division is erecting a monument in their honor...' Two pieces, fine condition.
