OLIVER HAZARD PERRY II
(1825-1870) Son of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, served as his father's secretary during the expedition to open Japan to Western trade in 1854, later appointed U.S. Consul at Hong Kong and Canton. Partially-printed D.S. as U.S. Consul, 1p., 4 1/4" x 9", Canton, Jan. 1, 1859, an exchange note for $232.18, paid to Russell & Co., and advisable to Secretary of State LEWIS CASS (1782-1866). Bears multiple endorsements on the verso, including one on the behalf of J.M. Forbes & Co. Vertical fold at the center, with a minor split, else very good.
