Description:

OLIVER EDWARDS
(1835 - 1904) Union brigadier general whose troops held the 'bloody angle' at Spotsylvania, received the surrender of Petersburg, and captured Richard Ewell, Custis Lee, their staffs, and an entire Rebel brigade at Sayler's Creek. Lengthy, war-date A.L.S. 'O. Edwards Col 37th Mass Vols Commnd Post', 4pp. 4to., Fort Hamilton (Brooklyn), Aug. 29, 1863, a heartfelt letter to John E. Johnston, father of his intended, Ann Eliza Johnston. In part: '…It has been…the wish of Annie and I that we should be married at the first opportunity for some time, and I confess that when I found myself at this beautiful Post I did hope that you and Mrs. Johnston would meet me with Annie in Springfield…It is whispered that an expedition is to start from here to Texas, that is only rumor. Col Day, an old Regular Officer, was ordered to the War Dept to command at Ft. Hamilton, but Genl. Conley [?] has sent him away on sixty days' leave as he says he will not let me go and prefers me to him…I can easily run up to Springfield but I fear it will be hard to procure leave…I have however applied…do not tell Annie for I do not want to disappoint her again. I am worried about Annie and pray she will not be sick…It seems wicked for us not to be married as we have been betrothed so long. Mother has been expecting you so soon that she has not written…whatever is best for Annie is what I want…'. At the time of this letter, Edwards and the 37th were stationed in New York to maintain control after the July 1863 Draft Riots. Edwards would soon have his wish, marrying Annie in Sep. 1863, just before the 37th would take part in Mine Run. Near fine condition.
