Description:

(1835 - 1904) Union brigadier general whose troops held the ‘bloody angle' at Spotsylvania, received the surrender of Petersburg, and captured Richard Ewell, Custis Lee, their staffs, and an entire Confederate brigade at Sayler's Creek. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Winchester, Virginia, Oct. 16, 1864, to William H. Seward Jr. In part: ‘...I have the honor to state...the 17th Regiment Penna. Cav. reports, that Detachments...sent from this Post as Escorts and Despatch bearers have been and are being used for Picket, Patrol and other duty at Martinsburg. This Regiment was left at this Post to report to me, by orders from Major General Sheridan...I should have on hand, at all times, every available man. I would therefore earnestly request that you return without delay, those now on duty at your Post and that you will not hereafter retain any other escort...' Edwards signs at the conclusion as colonel. A few minor tears at the right edge, text is still legible, and very light staining at the top edge. Overall, very good.
