Description:

Historic newspaper, the April 19, 1861 edition of the Fremont, Ohio "Journal", 4pp. folio, presenting a detailed account of the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston and the subsequent declaration of war between the U.S. and the Confederacy. The paper reprints a series of telegraphs between Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard and U.S. Secretary of War L.P. Walker charting the breakdown of negotiations between the two sides. These give way to dispatches offering a lengthy and detailed description of the Confederate artillery assault on Fort Sumter, beginning with the declaration of war on April 12. The dispatches continue to describe the course of events through the fort's capitulation on April 14, as well as the reactions and war plans of many Union states and locales. Much more good content besides. Ragged and with holes at the left edge where disbound, shows minor toning to the edges, else very good.
