Description:

Fine historic newspaper, the July 2, 1863 edition of the Boston "Daily Evening Traveller", 4pp. folio, containing on the front page a rare and very early report of the Battle of Gettysburg, on the second day of that historic engagement. The item is very brief and reads in full: "SEVERE BATTLE NEAR GETTYSBURG - Maj. Gen. [John F.] Reynolds Killed - July 1. A special despatch to the 'Times', dated Gettysburg Pa. 1st, says a heavy engagement since 9 o'clock this morning has been going on between the rebels under Longstreet and Hill, and the 1st and 11th corps under Reynolds and Meade. The locality is beyond the Gettysburg and Chambersburg pike. Portions of the fight have been very severe, with heavy loss. Thus far the onset of the enemy has been successfully resisted by the two corps mentioned, and the 3d and 12th are now coming up. I regret to say that Maj. Gen. Reynolds was mortally wounded and has since died." The page also features a more detailed report of the skirmish between Confederate cavalry under Stuart and Union militiamen at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, also on July 1. The paper shows a vertical folds with slight splits, with a few chips and small tears to the edges, else very good.
