Description:

(OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES) O.S.S. 'PANCAKE FLIPPER' STILETTO, IDENTIFIED
Near mint condition and very rare OSS Stiletto fighting knife and scabbard, commonly called known as the 'Pancake Flipper', produced between 1942 and 1943 for behind the front line members of William J. Donovan's O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services). The initial production order was for only 10,000 knives, the design based on the British Fairbanks & Sykes fighting knife and manufactured by Landers, Frary, and Clark of New Britain, Connecticut. The knife, 11.25 in. long overall, bears a faultless blade with needle-sharp tip and virtually 100% of its original bluing. The stippled brass grip retains almost all of its bluing, save a very small exposed area at the top of the grip in the pommel area revealing some bare brass. The scabbard and 'pancake flipper'-style belt loop fittings retain approximately 98% of their original olive drab paint, and show only light wear where the crossguard has met the 'flipper'. The brown leather of the body of the scabbard is completely intact, showing only a few negligible surface scrapes, and the tip of the scabbard is faultless. This could be the very best example of this rare knife obtainable anywhere. It was found among the personal possessions of O.S.S. Cpl. Charles M. Toth and a copy of both sides of his discharge showing his OSS service is included. Other items associated with Toth are offered elsewhere in this sale.
