Lot 248E
248.5. OFFERING SQUAWS FOR SILVER Interesting (though insulting) A.L.S., 14pp. 4to., New York, June 26, 1864 in which Marcia writes her friend Sarah of her brother's travels in the West. In part: "...[he] is quite in the notion of buying western land - thinks it would be such a good investment...he tells me he saw Indian women chopping wood for the Pacific Railroad - the men are so idle they will not work. Stopping at one of the stations, they were visited by some Indians. One of Willie's friends gave a small piece of silver to one of the men who immediately offered him his Squaw in return. Was he not a devoted husband?...". Some staining yet still easily and entirely legible, and a clean tear at top of first page. $150 - 200
