Description:

248.4. EARLY OBJIBWAY INDIAN CHIEF TRANSLATES TRIBAL NAMES INTO ENGLISH An interesting D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but apparently mid-nineteenth century or earlier], in which an Objibway Chief named Maunguidous translates his name, as well as that of four other members of the tribe, into English. Perhaps not surprisingly, Maunguidous translates his name as "Hero", while the other four receive translations as "Thunderbird who sits in the Clouds", "A White Reindeer", and so forth. At left margin, a note in another hand states that: "The first signature is the name of the writer, a chief of the Objibway tribe of Indians". Neatly mounted to a piece of period paper, light edge chipping and light foxing, overall very good condition. $300 - 400
