Lot 224A
224A. OATH PROMISING TO EMANCIPATE SLAVES A most unusual loyalty oath incorporating a promise to emancipate slaves, 1p. 4to., Washington, Tenn., Oct. 25, 1865 in which one Henry Young, obviously a slave-owner, not only promises to "henceforth support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of States therein..." but also: "...all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves..." (spelling corrected). Notarized at bottom. Some toning along folds, else very good. This is the first such declaration we have encountered in fifteen years! $300- 400
