Description:

NUREMBURG CHIEF COUNSEL ARCHIVE
A superb archive of approximately 100 pages of typed transcripts from the Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes at Nuremburg written in both English and German and dating between 1946 and 1947 with some English translations of German documents entered into evidence. The papers concern a wide array of subjects including questions to be used in interrogations concerning the development and distribution of Zylkon-B, the primarily gas used at Auschwitz for extermination. Of great interest is a 1946 document concerning the notorious Einstazgruppen which carried out mass shootings of Jews and Russians in the wake of the German invasion of Russia: "...These commandos are given a wide latitude in selecting the 'undesirable' prisoners slated for execution and these usable in the administration of the occupied territories. The undesirables include: Communist Party Functionaries, Political Commissars, Jews, members of the Intelligentsia, etc...". Also includes a typescript draft of Rudolf Brandt's October 1946 testimony concerning sterilization experiments as well as a report on medical experiments performed at Dachau by Brandt. In part: "...The experimental subjects were placed in a closed chamber in which air pressure could be increased or decreased. if the prisoners were placed in a vacuum, they were often kept there until their lungs ruptured. This experiment was frequently used as a method of execution. High pressure caused such extreme pain that the victims tore their heads and faces with their fingers and nails, beat the walls with their hands and screamed in an effort to relieve pressure on their eardrums... ". Other "experiments" included cold water immersion, forcing prisoners to stand outdoors naked in the cold for long periods, castrations, "Liver punctures", viral injections, plastic surgery and bone transplantation, dietary experiments, injections of typhus, bone operations, etc. Other documents include a lengthy report on the German massacre of Italian troops on the islands of Cephalonia and Corfu; the use of prison slave labor by German officers; the execution of prisoners at Soldau in Poland; translation of the German documents establishing the concentration camp at Stutthof; cases of corruption within the SS; a translation of a German report on Typhus vaccine at Buchenwald and much more. Paper overall is quite fragile with numerous marginal losses, folds and moderate toning and deserves good care and restoration. Should be viewed.
