Description:

343. RICHARD M. NIXON (1913-1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Superb content and association T.L.S. "Dick" as presidential candidate on his letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Mar. 8, 1968 to noted columnist and author Jim Bishop, remembered for his books, The Day Lincoln Was Shot, The Day Kennedy Was Shot, and The Day Christ Was Born and The Day Christ Died. Nixon opens his letter mentioning that it might be a bit "premature" to make arrangements to write a story "The Day Nixon was Nominated", adding: "There are miles to go between here and Miami". Then he gets to the point of Bishop's request: "As for the day the President was assassinated, I was in Dallas that morning and left for New York on an eight a.m. plane...When I reached New York, my secretary, Rose Mary Woods, tried to reach me with the news at the airport, but missed me. I was first informed by someone who ran up to the cab I was riding in and said, `Kennedy's been shot.' My first reaction was, `My God, it must have been one of the nuts.' As soon as I got home, I found out the President was dead and called J. Edgar Hoover, who told me it had been a Communist who had done the shooting..." Very good condition. Of course, Nixon and Kennedy were political arch-rivals, and Nixon's mention of a "Communist" certainly jibes with his earlier political statements! $1,500-2,000
