Description:

342. LYNDON B. JOHNSON Fine T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 21, 1968 to noted columnist and author Jim Bishop. Johnson opens his letter thanking Bishop and his wife for visiting, and for sending him a clipping. He adds: "The kindness you have shown me in your writings has time and again demonstrated your trust in me and your respect for the office I happen to occupy. I know that success in journalism often calls for a very sharp pen; despite this, you chose to remain a kind and fair-minded friend. But not, I hope, at any expense to truth..." Fine. At the time, Johnson was facing wide-ranging criticism in the press for his handling of the Vietnam War. After the Tet offensive of January 1968, his presidency was dominated by the Vietnam War more than ever. As more American soldiers died, Johnson's popularity plummeted. $300-400
