Description:

Very rare business card from a Civil War-era New Orleans slave auctioneer. The clay-coated 2.5 x 1.5 in. white card was issued by slave auctioneers J. G. Mackey and L. P. Day. The card bears their names at the top, the balance reading: 'MACKEY & DAY, AUCTIONEERS, Commission and Forwarding Merchants, Will pay strict attention to the purchase and sale of Real Estate, Negroes, Horses, Mules, Carriages, and every description of Merchandise, Nos. 57 Magazine & 866 Levee St., 4th Dist. New Orleans, La. N.B. All orders promptly attended to.' The card is affixed to the front cover (only) of a scrapbook owned by a Union officer who was part of Butler's force occupying New Orleans. The cover also bears a small engraving of soldiers commanded by Commodore David Dixon Porter on Canal Street in the city, along with a clipping from a Boston newspaper. Light stains, front cover detached, some damage to the spine, though interior pages remain bound. The card itself is in very good condition.
