Description:

Rare partly-printed ship's manifest declaring the shipment of a slave to New Orleans, Louisiana from Mobile, Alabama. The 12.5 x 8 in. document begins: 'Manifest of negroes, mulattoes, and people of color, taken on board the Sloop Herald whereof Hugh Monroe is master...to be transported to the Port of New Orleans...for the purposes of being sold or disposed of as slaves, or to be held to service or labor...' The manifest then includes some particulars about the slave 'Jack', indicating he is 22 years of age, 5 foot 10 inches tall, and is 'black.' At bottom, the document is dated Jan. 18, 1820 from the port of Mobile, Alabama, and is signed by 'Gordon B. Miller, Shipper' and shipmaster Hugh Monroe, both of whom swear that 'the persons above have not been imported or brought into the United States since the first day of January 1808' and are considered slaves under Alabama state law. The local district collector attests to the contents of the document on the reverse, finally authorizing the slave to be shipped to the port of New Orleans. Three vertical folds with some marginal splits thereat, some loss and light spots of staining. Still very good condition.
