Lot 408
(NAPOLEONIC BROADSIDE) A dramatic printed broadside, folio (16 1/2" x 21"), Fabre, [c. January 1814], in French, being a call to arms to repel the invasion of France by German, British and Italian forces at the start of 1814 during the war of the Sixth Coalition. Vice Admiral Ganteaume implores the people of Provence to take arms to repel the final invasion of France that would send Napoleon to Elba and place Louis XVIII on the throne.. Ganteaume reminds the reader of the invasion of France in 1793 and assures them (loosely translated) that their object again is "...To control and devastate beautiful France, the object of all their jealousies, such was their purpose before and so it will be again...Your Government, your laws, your goods, the honor of your families, even your lives are in danger... French People, to arms, join together and push back this unjust aggression... The enemy is redoubling their efforts to penetrate your country... " A final desperate plea as an army of 50,000 under Bellegare pushed Eugene out of northern Italy and into the Cote d'Azur. Meanwhile Wellington was pushing northward over the Pyrenees while Blucher and Schwartzenberg steamrolled toward Paris. On March 31, Paris fell and on April 11, Napoleon signed the Treaty of Fontainebleau which exiled him to Elba. Marginal losses, weak at folds, light dampstains and soiling, otherwise very good overall. $300-500
