NAVAL ARCHIVE OF WILLIAM GRIFFIS
A collection of papers relative to the naval career of Montgomery P. Griffis including documents, photographs, manuscripts and ephemera, some of which are mounted in a late nineteenth century scrap album consisting of approximately 100 pieces. Montgomery Griffis enlisted at Baltimore on Dec. 18, 1863 serving as a fireman aboard the U.S.S. Winona until Aug. 15, 1864 when he became 3rd Assistant Engineer aboard the several ships including the U.S.S. Glover. Includes GIDEON WELLES D.S. 1p. 4to., Sept. 24, 1864 ordering Griffis to continue his service aboard the U.S.S. WINONA. Mounted together with the docket portion which bears an endorsement of JOHN A. DALGHREN; JOHN A. DALGHREN D.S. 1p. 4to., "Flag Ship 'Philadelphia'", Port Royal Harbor, S.C., Aug. 16, 1864, ordering Griffis to report to "Chief Engineer... of U.S.S. 'Supply'... a Member of a Board of Naval Officers for Examination as to your qualification for promotion to grade of acting 3rd. Asst Engineer...". Mounted; JOHN A. DALGHREN L.S. 1p. 4to., "Flag Steamer 'Harvest Moon'", Charleston Roads, S.C., Sept. 15, 1864 appointing Griffis as "Acting Third Assistant Engineer"; JOHN A. DALGHREN D.S. 1p. 4to., "Flag Steamer 'Philadelphia'", Port Royal Harbor, S.C., Oct. 25, 1864 detaching Griffis from the U.S.S. WINONA and assigning him to the U.S.S. Glover, Mounted; GIDEON WELLES, partly printed D.S. 1p. folio, Washington, Sept. 4, 1865, his discharge from the Navy. Separated at folds, some tape repairs, fair condition. The collection also includes a carte-de-visite photo of the U.S.S. Winona at Baton Rouge (May 1865); a carte-de-visite of Griffis in uniform, and a cabinet card photo of Griffis later in life wearing his G.A.R. badge. The collection also includes a good deal of original poetry, presumably in Griffis' hand, family correspondence dating between 1853 and the turn of the 20th century, and other related news clippings and ephemera. Overall good condition.
