Description:

CONFEDERATE HOME FRONT LETTER
A.L.S. of R. M. Rucker, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.] Oct. 9, 1862 to his son, Pvt. S. R. Rucker of the 2nd Tennessee concerning Union advances into Tennessee. He writes, in part: ...Have heard from others that by the grace of God you are well and have escaped death and wounds in every battle you were in -- There is a Yankee Army in Nashville (bad arrangement) which sent out in force some raw recruits, which were in a state of organization - there were even a few hard regular troops which kept them in check - The people of Tennessee have suffered much every way for the last six months - It was a time to try more souls - I have lost two negro men - Peter who left with Mitchell's army that went to Huntsville - Never heard of him since - Jake, who is now in Nashville with them as I understand his tale is two long to tell him, two mules, 2 loads of corn and 12 head of young fat cattle including my fine spike steers. The Yankees bad as they may be, have uniformly treated your mother and myself with respect - your mother has some jeans to make into clothes for you - which when made up will be send when an opportunity presents - it is almost as difficult to send to Northern Kentucky as to Corinth - I have made a bad crop this year - Susan has not lost one negro yet and Mr. Edmond only one negro... ". With integral address leaf. Partial fold separations, light soiling and small loss from seal tear, else very good.
