Description:

810. NASA MEDICAL OFFICER'S ARCHIVE Fine and important grouping of five monthly calendar books and a "Notebook #2", spiral bound, belonging to Dr. D. OWEN COONS and used by him at NASA between 1964 and 1968 when Coons served as Chief of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center Medical Office. The notebooks contain many references to important events in NASA's early days, such as a "GT-4" notation for the first week of June, 1965 indicating the flight of the Gemini IV and Ed White's historic walk in space. On January 27, 1967 Coons makes a simple three-word entry: "The Apollo Fire", referring to the tragic launch pad fire of Apollo 1 which took the lives of Edward White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee. In the days following the fire, Coons previously scheduled entries are scratched out, with new entries showing his trip to West Point to attend Ed White's funeral services. Interestingly, the Whites and Coons were immediate neighbors. The balance of the books are filled with details of Dr. Coons' daily meetings and activities at NASA in these formative years, with Notebook #2 reading more like a diary with extensive technical notes and mission details from January 1966 to April 1967, which should be read! The agendas alone provide many interesting bits of information, include: "...Gemini Review Report...GT-8 crew to Cape...Lockheed Pres. Re: LEM...Aldrin AMU...GTA-9 Agena didn't make orbit...Dick Gordon test in Chamber B...", etc. Overall very good. $400 - 600
