Description:

NANCY REAGAN
(1921 - 2016) First lady of the United States from 1981-1989, second wife of President Ronald Reagan. Great content T.L.S. as first lady on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington D.C., June 27, 1985, responding to a letter from a supporter. In part: '...Thank you very much for your kind letter and words of support. The President and I are truly grateful...We were confident that his visit to Bitburg was morally right and feel more so now that the trip is over. Your letter strengthens our convictions...' Moderately toned, else fine. Matted. In May of 1985, President Ronald Reagan made a ceremonial visit to a German cemetery outside Bitburg with West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to honor the 40th anniversary of V-E Day. Controversy arose in the American media prior to the visit, especially among Jewish communities, when it was learned that almost 50 of the 2000 German soldiers buried at the cemetery were members of the infamous Waffen SS. Despite pressure from aides, and his wife Nancy, President Reagan stayed on the planned course. He reportedly told his deputy chief of staff, 'I know you and Nancy don't want me to go through with this, but I don't want you to change anything when you get over there, because history will prove I'm right. If we can't reconcile after forty years, we are never going to be able to do it.'
