Description:

NAMED 27TH INFANTRY REGIMENT ‘SIBERIA' HELMET AND UNIFORM
A very fine uniform grouping related to the U.S. Army's 27th Infantry Regiment, best known for its service with the American Expeditionary Force sent to Siberia from 1918 to 1920 during the Russian Civil War. Includes: A U.S. M1917 helmet, finished with a cork texture and later whitewashed, and with the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 27th – a wolfhound in blue with the letter ‘S' at center – in blue paint at the front, almost certainly done after the regiment's return to the U.S. for their participation in victory celebrations. A tag attached to the helmet identifies the owner as ‘E. Buckley' of the regiment's headquarters company. The rear skirt of the helmet is heat-stamped ‘217' over ‘Z D'. The helmet's liner and chinstrap are missing, and small holes have been punched in the front and rear skirts, else very good. WITH: U.S. M1912 khaki cotton summer-weight uniform tunic, displaying a felt multi-piece patch depicting the 27th Regiment's DUI sewn to the left-hand shoulder, above a red felt discharge chevron. Two metallic gold ribbon overseas service chevrons are displayed at the left-hand cuff, with the collar displaying a ‘U.S.' collar disk on the right-hand side, with a collar disk displaying crossed rifles over ‘H Q' at the left, tying the uniform to Buckley along with the aforementioned helmet. The uniform is closed at front with five darkened brass buttons depicting the U.S. seal, attached with split rings and each marked ‘The Austin Co. Providence R.I.' on the reverse. Four flap-covered patch pockets are sewn at the breast and waist, the flaps of each secured with smaller darkened brass buttons marked ‘R. L. Mfg. Co. Newark N.J.' on the reverse and also attached through the fabric with split rings. Two similar buttons secure the shoulder straps. A cloth label identifying the maker as Friedman Bros. & Co. of New York is sewn within the right-hand waist pocket, bearing an illegible black ink inscription. The laundry or part number ‘881 19' is stamped in black ink inside all four pocket flaps, as well as inside the right-hand waist and sleeve. The tunic is unlined and shows a few negligible spots of soiling, but is otherwise in fine condition. The uniform is completed by a pair of khaki cotton calf-length trousers, with reinforced seat and lace-up cuffs. A laundry number is inked on one rear pocket, but no other markings or labels are present. Also in fine condition. Three pieces. The American Expeditionary Force in Siberia was charged with assisting the Czechoslovak Legion as they were hindered in their progress along the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Vladivostok, as well as to protect the large quantity of military supplies and rolling stock sent to assist the Russian Empire's war efforts on the Eastern Front. In addition to opposing Bolshevik forces in the region, the AEF was intended to ensure that neither Cossack marauders nor the Japanese military would take advantage of the unstable political environment along the strategic railroad line and in the resource-rich Siberian regions straddling it.
