Description:

332ND INFANTRY REGIMENT ITALIAN SERVICE UNIFORM
An extremely fine uniform grouping belonging to a soldier of the U.S Army's 332nd Infantry Regiment, which took part in the Vittorio Veneto offensive of 1918, helping to defeat the opposing Austro-Hungarian forces and secure final victory for Italy. The group includes a prewar-style U.S. winter-weight uniform tunic, constructed of olive-drab wool. The left-hand shoulder bears a bullion and wool patch depicting the regimental insignia of the 332nd, a winged Lion of St. Mark holding a book emblazoned with the numerals ‘332', over an embroidered felt U.S. 83rd Infantry Division patch, and this over a multi-piece felt Third Army of Occupation patch. Below these insignia appears a red felt discharge chevron, with an overseas duty patch featuring two gold bullion chevrons at the left-hand cuff. The right-hand sleeve displays a subdued multi-part felt infantryman's insignia patch. The left-hand breast displays four decorations: a U.S. WWI Victory Medal with Italy clasp, beneath its ribbon bar; an Italian Commemorative Medal for the Italo-Austrian War 1915-1918, beneath its ribbon bar; a U.S. Army Sharpshooter badge, beneath a ribbon bar for the U.S. Army of Occupation Medal; and an Italian Order of Vittorio Veneto cross. The collar displays a ‘U.S. N.A. [National Army]' monogram screwback insignia disk on the right-hand side, with an infantryman's collar disk with the company letter ‘F' at left. The uniform is closed at front with five sewn-on darkened brass buttons depicting the U.S. seal, four maker-marked ‘Am. Button Co. Newark N.J.' on the reverse, with one marked ‘Scovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury'. Four flap-covered patch pockets are sewn at the breast and waist, the flaps of each secured with smaller darkened brass buttons on the reverse. Two similar buttons secure the tapered shoulder straps. The coat is lined with black cloth, open at the bottom edge, and no manufacturer's marks or labels are present. The jacket is accompanied by an olive-drab wool overseas cap, with the brass numerals ‘332' secured on the left-hand side with wire pins, with a cloth size label sewn inside but otherwise unmarked. Also present is an M1916/1917 olive drab flannel pullover uniform shirt with a heavily-faded label inside the breast pocket, as well as a pair of olive-drab wool calf-length trousers, with reinforced seat and lace-up cuffs. A cloth label sewn to the exterior of one hip pocket identifies the maker as Henry Sonneborn & Co. of Baltimore, and a web belt is still fitted. The uniform is completed by a pair of olive-drab wool puttees. The uniform jacket is missing a snap near the hem, and the undershirt shows some wear to the collar, otherwise in fine overall condition.
