Description:

MORTON GOULD
(1913-1996) American composer and conductor, wrote Broadway hits such as Billion Dollar Baby and Arms and the Girl; awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1995. A group of four letters dating 1970-1989, each to noted composer Philip Lambro. In a T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Sept. 18, 1970, Gould writes: "...You certainly may have the Guggenheim contact me for a recommendation...I hope that you get the fellowship...". Continuing in a more humorous vein in an undated A.LS. 1p. 4to., July 29, [n.y.], he writes: "...Received your epistle...I have just written Tom Rowlands...I gave what is for me a high recommendation. I quote in part: 'I endorse Philip Lambro Health Foods - among illiterates he is known as the founder of Raw Honey and the Father of his Country. Should RCA Victor continue their Raw Carrot Synthesizer project I can think of no better blender'...". Another brief undated A.L.S. extends this tongue-in-cheek style: "...I went to a bullfight, did you go to a bullfight? Mommy feeds me a big dinner at 3 o'clock does your Mommy feed you a big dinner at 3 o'clock...Your disease ridden friend, Morton". Finally, a more serious T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Sept. 15, 1989 rounds out this correspondence: "...Some time ago you left me sections of your commentary and autobiography. At long last I have finished going through it. I found it intriguing...". Along with two photocopies of letters of Gould to Lambro with similar content, and a copy of an interview between the two. Overall very good.
