MORMON FORGER MARK HOFMANN WRITES HIMSELF A CHECK
MARK HOFFMAN(b. 1954) American forger who frequently conned the Church of Latter-Day Saints into buying alleged early Mormon documents, including the famed Anthon Transcript and Salamander letter. Currently in prison for murders connected to his schemes. Fine partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Salt Lake City, Nov. 4, 1980, a check drawn on the First Security Bank of Utah, ordering an $80.00 payment to "Cash", boldly engrossed and signed "Mark W. Hofmann" in blue ink. Hofmann began his forging activities in 1980, receiving $25,000 worth of artifacts from the Mormons on Oct. 13, 1980. Hofmann's checking account on the date of this check was filled with money from his new forgery business! Stamp canceled on verso, slightly affecting signature else fine.
