Description:

MOHANDAS K. GANDHI
(1869-1948) Indian nationalist and spiritual leader considered the father of his country, Gandhi's philosophy of passive resistance and non-violence set the stage for the British withdrawal from and independence of India. "GOD IS TRUTH": A PHOTO INSCRIBED TO GANDHI'S BIOGRAPHER AND POLITICAL STALWART Superb and rare signed photograph: "God is Truth M. K. Gandhi", 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" b/w, a wonderful image of "Bapu" in traditional garb, seated upon the floor and smiling as he regards the viewer, at the same time spinning cotton from a loom on the floor before him. An unknown man deep in thought lies on a bed behind Gandhi. There is some negligible crazing to the glossy surface of the image, largely at the left margin and virtually undetectable, otherwise this piece is in very good to fine condition with an attracive, dark signature. It is sold with the original 8" x 10" cardboard mount which bears its provenance: "This photograph belonged to Henry Polak, editor of 'India Today'". H. S. L. Polak, was a solicitor and prominent political journalist, who during the early 1900's worked for Gandhi's law firm in Johannesburg, South Africa. He became a close friend and supporter of Gandhi and walked by his side on the famous "Salt March", and shared his imprisonment in 1930/32" Polak also was one of Gandhi's biographers and carried on an extensive correspondence with his long-time friend. Of course, Gandhi's quotation is one of his primary philosophies. As he wrote: "God is Truth, but God is many other things also. That is why I say Truth is God…Only remember that Truth is not one of the many qualities that we name. It is the living embodiment of God, it is the only Life, and I identify Truth with the fullest life..."
