Description:

KEMAL ATATURK
(1881 - 1938) Turkish army officer, revolutionary, and founder of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first President from 1923 until his death in 1938. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and theories became known as Kemalism. As president, Ataturk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a modern, progressive, and secular nation-state. Very rare and early signed photograph as "Mustafa Kemal Pasha" in Turkish, 3 3/4" x 5 3/4" b/w, a stunning chest, up pose of the determined future ruler of Turkey, who has added his very bold ca. 1920 signature to the left of his image. This piece is flawless, showing not a single defect of any kind and probably the best example of this early date obtainable. Sold with a second photo postcard (unsigned, lesser quality), as well as a copy of the original 2004 J. A. Stargardt auction catalog listing and their original letter of authenticity and guarantee sent to our consignor. A very rare piece, especially signed in this manner. At about the time he signed this photograph, Ataturk held the rank of "mirliva" (brigade commander). In Ottoman military ranks, "pasha" was a common title given to all levels above mirliva, thus he became known as "Mustafa Kemal Pasha" (Turkish: "Pasa").
