(1800 - 1874) Thirteenth President of the United States who succeeded to the presidency upon the death of Taylor. Fine content partly-printed D.S. as President, filled-out in his hand, 1p. 4to., Washington, Sept. 9, 1852, an order to the Secretary of State to "..affix the Seal of the United States to a full power for Humphrey Marshall to treat with China of and concerning claims of citizens of the United States upon that Government...". HUMPHREY MARSHALL (1812-1872) served as a brigadier general in the Confederate army and as Minister to China from 1852 to 1854. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
