Description:

philosopher; and the chief proponent of anarchism. Rare A.L.S. "M. Bakunin" 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Jan. 1, 1862, in Cyrillic to Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev, in part: "...Please... come...to London soon. I want to...discuss many things with you. I don't dare to come to Paris, as long as I'm not sure they won't kick me out there...I should have to go there...especially when Muraniev-Anurski is there...It is imperative that you see him or at least write to him...". In the left-hand margin, Turgenev has added a short note in his hand. Bakunin and Turgenev had become friends when they were in school together and enjoyed a lifetime friendship. Turgenev dedicated his masterwork Fathers and Sons, published the year of our letter, to Bakunin. In 1855, Bakunin had been sent to Siberia for his political activities, but escaped, hiding aboard an American ship bound for Japan. He arrived in England in 1861, and remained in Europe for the remainder of his life. Bakunin is rare in any form, and this letter to a renowned colleague is especially desirable. Boldly penned and very good.
