Description:

3. HENRY MIDDLETON (1717-1784) Second President of the Continental Congress, preceded in office by Peyton Randolph and succeeded first by Peyton Randolph for a few days, then by John Hancock. Excessively rare partly-printed D.S. "Henry Middleton" as President of the Continental Congress, 6" x 4 1/2", Charleston, SC, Apr. 29, 1775, a twenty pound South Carolina note boldly signed by Middleton in his capacity as a member of the State Senate. Also signed by BENJAMIN HUGER (1746-1779), a member of the Assembly, killed by fire from the lines of Charleston as he returned from reconnoitering the position of the British under General Prevost. Ornate floral design on verso, obviously to deter counterfeiters. A light cancellation line crosses Middleton's bold signature which remains very easily read, with other cancellation lines on the document, a few tiny areas of insignificant ink erosion, clear of signature, else quite clean and fresh. Graded "Very Fine" by PMG, encapsulated. $5,000- 6,000
