Description:

4. BENEDICT ARNOLD (1741-1801) Revolutionary War major general and traitor, he repulsed the British in the Mohawk Valley and fought Burgoyne at Saratoga. Arnold's plot to surrender West Point to the British was discovered, and thereafter he led British raids in Virginia and Connecticut. Rare A.D.S. "B. Arnold Col.", 1p. 4to. [Quebec], Jan. 19, 1776, penned while still Arnold was still besieging Quebec and slowly recovering from his severe wound following the failed assault of December 31st. The document is a pass, addressed "To Whom it may Concern", and reads in full: "The bearer Capt. Mott is Sent with the Carioles [toboggan-like sleds] to take care of the Money, baggage, etc. which he is Ordered to Deliver [to] some officer of the Garrison. By Order of the General-B. Arnold Col. Jany. 19, 1776". Very boldly penned, a few lightly toned spots, else near very good. In the fall of 1775, Washington agreed to Arnold's plan to lead an expedition to capture Quebec. He marched with 700 men by way of the Maine wilderness, a remarkable feat of woodsmanship and endurance, and, reinforced by General Richard Montgomery, attacked the well-fortified city. The combined assault on December 31, 1775 failed, Montgomery was killed, and Arnold was severely wounded in the leg. It would not be until April before Arnold would finally retreat across the border with his remaining forces. Despite the failed assault, Arnold would soon receive a promotion to brigadier general for his valor in the assault. Arnold's letters and documents from the invasion of Canada are excessively rare! $7,000-9,000
