(1827 – 1863) Irish American Union brigadier general and close confidant of President Abraham Lincoln. He led the 69th New York to Washington, D.C. and was one of the first to serve in the defense of Washington, then led the 69th into action at First Bull Run. He later formed the Corcoran Legion and besieged Suffolk. Killed when thrown from his horse. Rare, fine content war-date A.L.S. 'Michael Corcoran Brig. Genl', written in response to a battlefield dispatch (included) of Lt. Col. GEORGE STETZEL of the 11th Penn. Cavalry. Stetzel's pencil note, 5 x 3.5 in., [n.p., n.d., likely 1863 before Suffolk], in part: '...I hold my old position...the skirmishing is still kept up by the skirmishers - the enemy hold their old position...' Stetzel used a portion of a letter signed by Brigadier Gen. CHARLES C. DODGE to write his note. In response to Stetzel's, report, Corcoran penned an A.L.S., 1p. 4 x 6.25 in. , from 'Hd Qrs 1st Div.' to 'Major Foster'. In full: 'Enclosed is a communication from Col. Stetzel. I have ordered the infantry Howitzers, and a part of the Cavalry, to return. The remainder[?] will stay as a Patrol'. Corcoran's letter was, due to necessity, also hastily torn from another sheet. Two pieces in this fine and important lot.
