Description:

MELTED GLASS VASE FROM THE FIREBOMBING OF HAMBURG
On July 27, 1943 shortly before midnight, 739 Allied aircraft attacked Hamburg with "blockbuster" bombs and primarily incendiary bombs. The unusually dry and warm weather, the concentration of the bombing in one area, and firefighting limitations culminated in a firestorm. The tornadic fire created a huge inferno with winds of up to 150 mph and reaching temperatures of 1,500 °F, which incinerated some eight square miles of the city. Asphalt streets burst into flame, and most of the 40,000 casualties caused by "Operation Gomorrah" happened on this night , with many asphyxiated in shelters. We offer a symbolic relic of that horrific night, what was once a flower vase, now a semi-melted mass of glass, about 5" tall with round decorative bulbs of glass on one side. A rainbow-like reflection appears in places, further attesting to the terrific heat to which this item was exposed.
