MATHEW THORNTON
(1714 - 1803) Signer of the Declaration of Independence and a pre-Revolution agitator. Partial A.D.S. but complete in itself, 1p. oblong 8vo., Londonberry, New Hampshire, Mar. 14, 1754, the concluding portion of a legal document in which Thornton directs the Sheriff and constables of Londonberry to arrest a James Tool [?] and have him turned over to Thornton or a superior. In part: "...You are hereby Required to Apprehend the Body of the Above Named James Tool...may be found in your Precinct & him safely keep so that he may be had before Me the Superior or some other of his Majesty's Justices of the Pease for the Province aforesd...to be further dealt with...". Irregularly trimmed at top, mounted, with remnants of a red-wax seal at top. Very good condition, with a portrait engraving.
