Description:

CHARLES THOMSON
(1729-1824) Irish-born American patriot, unanimously elected first Secretary of the Continental Congress in 1774 and held the post until 1789, chosen to notify Washington of his election to the Presidency. Good content manuscript L.S. as Secretary of Congress, 1p. legal folio, Philadelphia, Feb. 28, 1786 to Georgia Gov. Samuel Elbert. Thomson asks that he be forwarded a copy of the law passed by the state's legislature setting forth the sum committed in compliance with Congress' "Act, for Officers, Soldiers or Seamen, who have been disabled in the Service of the United States...". He also mentions that if the legislature has not yet acted on the issue, it should do so at the earliest opportunity. The law passed by Congress was the first veterans' disability act, caring for those who had been disabled as a result of wounds, injuries and sickness resulting from their service during the Revolution. Very good condition.
