Description:

MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA ROSTER AND RELATED DOCUMENTS
Lengthy Massachusetts militia roster, 2pp. 9 x 16.5 in., [Boston, ca. 1800], signed in type by William Donnison, Adjutant General of the Massachusetts militia. Donnison fought in the Revolutionary War and was the aide to Massachusetts Governor Hancock in 1786 before becoming Adjutant General in 1788. One side of the document bears the title: 'Directions for taking and revising, annually, the Muster-Roll of a Company'. The instructions, signed in type by Donnison, order that by the first Tuesday in May, each company's commanding officer or captain is to submit a roster of those enlisted, their arms and equipment, and forward same to his commanding officer. It also calls for a fine to be assessed for those failing to comply. The verso bears a list of names of about one hundred men, though the top of the list which would have noted weapons, equipment, etc. appears to have been lost. Some archival tape repairs. WITH: a brigade order signed by Bvt. Major W. Jackson, 1p. 4to., Warham, Aug. 14, 1804 setting forth the locations for upcoming parades throughout the local towns and villages, with further orders added by another officer beneath, with a likely unassociated receipt for a large quantity of timber, 1783. Faults include some archival tape repairs to splits, chips at margins, small interior holes, and foxing. Three pieces.
