FREDERICK, DUKE OF YORK
(1763-1827) British prince and military commander, the second son of George III. As Commander-in-Chief during the Napoleonic Wars, he oversaw the reorganization of the British Army, establishing vital structural, administrative and recruiting reforms for which he is credited with having done 'more for the army than any one man has done for it in the whole of its history'. Fine content E.S. ‘Frederick' 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], penned at the bottom of an L.S. by William A. Bowcawen to an unnamed gentleman, requesting approval of his resignation. In part: ‘…I beg you will be pleased to obtain for me His Majesty's consent to the sale of my Commission of Captain of a Company in the [?] Regiment of Guards [Frederick adds in holograph ‘which I purchased']. In case His Majesty shall be graciously pleased to permit the same, my intention is thereby to resign all right and pretension to any future Rank or promotion in the Army and I do further declare and certify upon the Word and Honour of an Officer and a Gentleman that I have not demanded or accepted, neither will I demand or accept directly or indirectly at any time or in any manner whatever more than the sum of 3,500 [pounds] being the price limited and fixed by His Majesty's Regulations…'. At the bottom, Frederick signs his approval. Folds, otherwise very good.
