Description:

MARIA FEODOROVNA
(1759-1828) Russian Empress, wife of Paul I (1754-1801) who tried to briefly rule after his assassination; also the mother of Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I. Fine content A.L.S. "Maria" 2pp. sm. 8vo., [n.p.], Sept. 13, 1790, in French to General Count Alexander von Benkendorff. His mother, a lady-in-waiting for Feodorovna, followed her to Russia from Wuttemberg. In part: "...I'm very grateful for your two letters and the expression of your sentiment for me. The friendship and the attention I showed your dear wife during her pregnancy and delivery were dictated to me by my heart...for I love her with all my soul; her health is perfect. Full of joy, she is at Our side and is taking part in all the festivities. Our four youngest children will stay at Gatschina or maybe we'll go back there ourselves after the celebrations are over. My dear Benkendorf, you already know about all the favors that have been granted on this day of celebration to those who took part in the campaigns. Your having been posted to General Batemnin's Army is the only reason why you are not among that happy number at this time. Everyone declares that your turn will come when the peace with Turkey is celebrated. I know very well that far from being disadvantaged this will work out in your favor because General Batemnin, I'm sure, will take this into account because he will be very aware of the marks of devotion which are given to him...and your being under his orders is a guarantee of your sentiments for him...". The Russo-Swedish War was waged from 1788-1790, with treaty of peace with Sweden signed at Varela on Aug. 14, 1790. Fine.
