Description:

MANNING F. FORCE
(1824 - 1899) Union brigadier general with Sherman at Atlanta where he was shot in the face while leading his men on. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Cincinnati, Feb. 19, 1882. An irritated Force pens a letter to Genl. William E. Strong (1840-1891) Union brevet brigadier general of the 12th Wis. regarding his involvement in a publication. In part: '… I was so disappointed by your declining to write the Vicksburg Campaign for Scribner, that I could not answer your letter at once. I agree with you that the time is too short between now and the 10th Aug. next to accomplish the work…But doubt complaining of having only brief intervals of time at your disposal when you have 'evenings and Sundays'. It seems to me…he might accomplish everything. It is however, some satisfaction to know that you intend…to write a history of the campaign…in some detail…[Andrew] Hickenlooper has handed me your manuscripts…I want to read them carefully before returning them to you…'. After the Civil War, Strong moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he was a lawyer and lumber merchant. Andrew Hickenlooper (1837-1904) was a Union brevetted brigadier general who led 'Hickenlooper's Battery' (or the 5th Ohio Independent Battery), during which he served with distinction at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Near fine condition.
