Description:

LUCIUS NORTHROP
(1811-1894) Confederate Commissary-General appointed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis, a personal friend. Northrop was responsible for the logistics and supply chain that transported food, clothing, and forage to the Southern armies of the American Civil War, particularly the Army of Northern Virginia. Northrop was also responsible for supplying the prison camps that housed Federal prisoners-of-war. Rare war-date manuscript L.S. 'L. Northrop C.G.S.', 1p 4to., Richmond, Aug. 14, 1863, on ‘Confederate States of America Subsistence Department' letterhead to Chief Commissary Officer for Florida, Pleasant Woodson White. Northrop writes tersely, in part: '…I desire that you will at once issue orders to all Officers and Agents under your charge, to make no publication of any kind whatsoever, which shall not have been submitted to you for your approval, as violations of good taste in this particular are frequently hurtful…'. White (1820-1919) was commissioned into the army in 1861, and thence commanded an important depot in Quincy, FL. In 1863, despite his attempts at secrecy, White's difficulties in supplying beef cattle to the army became known. The shortages thus revealed influenced the military campaign of 1864. Weakened, toned folds with a tiny holes thereon, otherwise very good condition.
