Description:

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON (d. 1970) American career Army officer and veteran of both World Wars, the Massachusetts state quartermaster in 1937. In August 1945, he was appointed Deputy Port Commander for the Port of Antwerp, for which he earned the Order of Leopold and the Legion of Merit. After the war, he was promoted to the Massachusetts Adjutant General, with the rank of Brigadier General, in 1946. Finally, he served as the President of the National Guard Association from 1957 to 1963. His green wool uniform, closed at the front with four brass buttons. Two silver General's stars are pinned to each shoulder strap, while the left breast bears an impressive seven ribbon bars, one of which bears three affixed 'pips'. The upper lapels bear a pair of matching 'U.S.' insignia. Each lower sleeve has the black mohair cloth rings, indicating Officer status. The right upper sleeve bears a National Guard insignia patch, while the left upper sleeve bears a sewn-on European Theatre of Operations insignia patch. A cloth tag sewn within an interior pocket bears the hand-inked name 'W. H. Harrison'. Sold with his matching pair of trousers, bearing two strips of black mohair stretching the length of each leg, and his proper Army Green color Officer's visor cap, bearing a printed ownership tag on the interior, which reads: 'Property of Major General William H. Harrison, Jr The Adjutant General, Massachusetts...' Sold with Harrison's two content-rich photo albums, complete with hundreds of affixed letters, photographs, and clipping pertinent to his service. The content ranges from the mid-1930s to the 1950s, the most notable inclusions include: three of S.P.s from Massachusetts Governor MAURICE J. TOBIN, showing Tobin pinning the stars of Adjutant General on Harrison's shoulders; numerous images of Harrison with Admiral Chester A. Nimitz; a letter of appreciation, and numerous unissued certificates by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, sent to veterans or to the next-of-kin of soldiers who died in combat; dozens of original images of marches and parades; and much more. Front cover of each has since been disbound, else very good. SOLD WITH: dozens of T.L.S.s addressed to Harrison, including many from prominent Massachusetts governors, includes: Governor LEVERETT SALTONSTALL, THOMAS 'TIP' O'NEILL JR., Governor JOHN A. VOLPE, Governor CHRISTIAN HERTER, FOSTER FURCOLO, 'Bockscar' pilot CHARLES W. SWEENEY; General LAURIS NORSTAD; Governor EDMUND MUSKIE; J. CALEB BOGGS; and many other politicians. Also includes a program from the Golden Jubilee Mission School, 1938-39; numerous booklets and handbooks; numerous Belgian publications about the port of Antwerp, including a post-war map of the city; and some additional biographical information. Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
