Description:

M1889 INFANTRY OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD BY CARL EICKHORN
An Imperial German M1889 Infantry Officer's dress sword, 29.5 in. blade, 35.25 in. overall, featuring a multi-piece hilt with a two-bar brass handguard and a folding crossguard depicting a crowned eagle clutching a sword and scepter, with the ‘WRII' cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II on its breast. The grip is wood covered with ribbed black lacquer, wrapped with braided brass wire and displaying a second brass royal cipher. A decaying piece of leather is placed between grip and handguard, likely the remnants of a finger loop. A black leather buffer is placed between the blade and crossguard. The blade is plated and features two fullers running almost the entire length, and the ricasso displays the early mark of maker Carl Eickhorn, depicting two squirrels over the initials ‘C. E.' The grip is wrapped with a leather-backed silver wire portapee, heavily tarnished and with the backing torn or missing in several places. The sword is housed in a steel scabbard with black lacquer finish, fitted with a single suspension loop. The blade shows small patches of oxidation at the ricasso end, some scratches and minor draw marks, and grease residue from the scabbard. The brass hardware shows a good patina, darker in some areas, and the scabbard shows chips to the finish overall and a single dent to one side about 5 in. from the chape. In very good condition overall.
